Meet Ron Kleiner, M.A., Ed.S.
Specialist in: Standardized Test Preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.),
Calculus (including college), High- and Middle-School Curriculum, Adult Learners
Hi, I’m Ron. I founded A1 Math Tutoring to help students move beyond memorizing formulas and start truly understanding the logic of mathematics. Whether we are tackling AP Calculus or working through a foundational curriculum, my goal is to build the critical thinking skills and confidence students need to succeed independently.
Returning to tutoring has reignited my enthusiasm for sharing my knowledge and expertise with students. I strive to instill in students a sense of confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for mathematics.
A Unique Blend of Experience
My approach is informed by my academic background and a professional history that spans both higher education and the technology sector:

-
Academic Foundation: With a background in pure mathematics from UC Berkeley and specialized training in math education from the University of Georgia, I have the pedagogical tools to make complex concepts clear.
-
Real-World Experience: Having spent 25 years as a software professional—primarily in the financial services and pharmaceutical sectors—I don’t teach math in a vacuum; I help students develop the problem-solving and analytical habits that are essential in most professional careers.
-
Teaching History: I have taught at the high school, community college, and university levels. I am familiar with the expectations of both classroom instructors and standardized test formats.
My Philosophy: Understanding Over Memorization
In math, there is a big difference between memorizing a sequence of steps and truly understanding the logic behind them. My approach focuses on the "Why" as much as the "How." When a student merely memorizes a technique, their knowledge is fragile; it often breaks the moment a problem is presented in an unfamiliar way. By focusing on deep understanding, I help students build a robust mathematical foundation. This shift from "how-to" techniques to genuine comprehension is what builds lasting confidence.
The A1 Method: Classic Problem-Solving
I prioritize a systematic approach that prepares students for the rigors of advanced coursework and exams. We master "classic" problem-solving strategies—similar to those championed by George Pólya—to strengthen underlying logic:
-
Deconstruct the Problem: We learn to strip away the 'wordiness' of complex problems to identify the core mathematical relationship being tested.
-
Visualize with Purpose: Whether it’s drawing a graph or diagram, or making an organized list, we use visual tools to uncover hidden patterns or to visualize the algebra.
-
Scale the Challenge: We practice solving a simpler, related problem first to gain the intuition needed to tackle the more complex version. For example, we might plug simple numbers into a function or formula to get a sense of how it behaves.
Supporting Adult Learners
In addition to working with high school and college students, I enjoy supporting adult learners. Whether you are preparing for a graduate school entrance exam (GRE/GMAT), studying for a trade school certification, or simply wanting to learn math for personal enrichment and to keep your mind sharp, I’m here to help. We’ll work together at your pace in a relaxed environment focused on whatever goals you’ve set for yourself.
